The Generals: Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (February, 1988)
Authors: Nancy Scott Anderson, Nancy Scott, and Dwight G. Anderson
Average review score:

awesome!
I'm surprised this book doesn't get more press. I found it very informative regarding Grant's and Lee's personal and professional lives, but I also learned a lot about 1800's American culture as well...and I'm hardly a novice when it comes to the Civil War-era. Seeing as one Anderson is a college professor and the other is a journalist, "The Generals" is immaculately written, an all-too-often rarity concerning history books nowadays. The fact that the book is such a smooth read puts it ahead of the other Grant/Lee bios out. The Andersons' are economical writers, communicating in a few hundred pages what other long-winded folks take volumes to say. As far as the mildly negative Library Journal review goes, I wonder if that has anything to do with the Andersons' refusal to pull punches when speaking of the frailties of both Grant and Lee. These long since dead men are idealized to such an extent today that it's hard to get a feel for the people they really were. After reading "The Generals," I feel that I know both Ulysses Grant and Robert Lee, triumphs failures and draws, as well as I'm ever going to. If you're tired of reading the same old stories about Honorable Lee or Stubborn Grant, and want to get a deeper understanding of two of the most important men in American Civil War, give "The Generals" a shot. Happy reading!

Discovering the Depth of America's Past
I'm a bit of a history buff, but would never have read this book without the prompting of a friend whom I respect. I struggled to get throught the first 50 pages, but after that I was hooked. Not only do I understand Grant and Lee better, but I feel I understand the USA better. A great story and a window on our nation. Recommended for anyone with the patience and time to peel back the layers of our past.

Excellent Book!!
This book takes you through the lives of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. Often, it acts like a timeline, paralleling the two lives at a particular date and recreating the events that were occurring to each at that time. Many of the personal letters from both Grant and Lee are used to tell the story of their lives. These letters are surrounded with superb insights of the day and brings with it the 'feeling' of 1800's America. It is interesting to see how vastly different these two men were only to be thrust together at such a difficult time in our nations history. I strongly recommend The Generals to anyone interested in the Civil War or American History in general.

German Tanks of World War II in Color (Enthusiast Color Series)
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (May, 2000)
Authors: Michael Green, Thomas Anderson, Frank Schulz, and Gladys Elena Morales
Average review score:

PANZERS IN COLOR
I've read many books about the panzers in WWII. They have many useful information inside them. But they all had old black&white photos and some of them were really bad. But this book is great. It doesn't have so many information, the written things are known by many WWII fans. But what makes this book a 5 star treasure is the pictures. Who doesn't want to see Tigers, Panthers, King Tigers, Jagdpanthers and many more in colorful high quality pictures. The photos are taken from museums and collectors all around the world. When you are looking at the pictures you'll feel the real power of the Panther's 75mm gun and smell its gasoline and hear the roaring engine.

Gem of a Book
German Tanks of World War II in Color is not an exhaustive study nor does it try to be. However, weighing in at only 96 pages, it contains a surprising amount of information. The book is organized into four chapters: light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks and support vehicles. All of the main panzers and armored fighting vehicles are discussed as well as their variants. The text is readable and informative. Text boxes add depth to the book by discussing tank anatomy, panzer division anatomy, weapon definitions, and color schemes. What truly makes this book unique are the color photographs of restored vehicles from museums and private collections around the world. The photo on the front cover is indicative of the eye-candy that awaits you inside. Recommended!

A great value.
This book packs a lot of information into its 96 pages. It's possible to find books on German Armor that have more detail, but not at this price. Brief but useful development histories are complemented by scores of high quality color photographs. Each of the Panzer series (I through VI) is featured, including most of the important variants (Tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery pieces). There is even a chapter on amored cars, halftracks, and reconnaissance vehicles. The text is good, but it is the photographs that set this book apart. Vintage snaps are coupled with shots of restored vehicles from museums and private collections around the world. I would recommend this book to modelers and history buffs alike.

Goodbye Jumbo... Hello Cruel World
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (May, 1994)
Author: Louie Anderson
Average review score:

This is a great book about all types of additions
Louie Anderson once again brings the struggles of his life to print, and opens up his heart and soul. I found this book even better than his first. I hope he decides to keep writing, he is very talented at bringing the reader into his situation.

Excellent, Entertaining, & Eating too
Funny and poignant, from Anderson's heart and stomach are a guide to life, coping, eating, love, comedy, and performing. Also manages to be downright hilarious with straight-ahead stand-up comedy. Somehow it all works. And very nicely, too. Inspired and inspiring.

Wonderful, sad, emotional
Louie Anderson does a wonderful job of revealing the true self. Especially the dialogue where he becomes Jumbo the elephant. He never mentioned a Love interest (human, not food) who could be support he so needed during these transitions he struggled with, the treadmill, death of his mom, selling the home, etc. Louie remains a real human, down to earth, complete with dysfunctional family. It was difficult to see him as the superstar wealthy comedian image we see. Whether it is food or some other controlling addiction, low self-esteem, children of alcoholics, pained school years, many can relate to his struggle. A good book by a funny man!

Gravity Golf: The Evolution & Revolution of Golf Instruction
Published in Hardcover by Gravity Sports Concepts Inc (February, 1995)
Authors: David C. Lee and Karen Anderson
Average review score:

Gravity Golf really works!
Gravity Golf really works!

This book is chock-full of information on the most energy-efficent way to swing a golf club. I've read this book many, many times and the more you read it and do the practice drills, the more you will understand the information that David Lee presents. Also, the video tapes that Lee sells from his infomercials and web site are helpful in understanding the training system.

Ernie Els and Fred Couples are "pure gravity" players. Many, many of the other top money winners on the PGA Tour are graviy players too. The problem is that most of these first-class golfers know how to swing using the Gravity Golf "mechanisim", but these golfers have difficulty explaining how they hit the golf ball so far and straight with so little effort using this mechainism. David Lee has developed the traing system to learn how to swing like Els and Couples.

This book must be re-read many, many times in conjunction with the practice drills. The video tapes that David Lee sells are helpful too. The best of all, go to a Gravity Golf school. Then, read and re-read the book and the Gravity Golf system will become crystal clear.

I belive that twenty years from now, this teaching methodology will be the "industry standard" way that golfers will trained--novice to Tour caliber. Many "copy-cat" golf instructors have already adopted many of the teaching techniques originally developed by David Lee.

Be prepared to allocate the time to hit many practice balls. Golf will become fun and practice, using the drills, will become informative. You will learn how and why good shots happen and why bad shots happen. The Gravity Golf system is not an instant miricle, but it is the "real thing", when it comes to the golf swing.

I am a Gravity Golf believer!

The Nicklaus Swing for Dummies
If you read Jack Nicklaus' books about his swing technique and didn't quite get it, take a look at Gravity Golf. It clarifies Jack's ambiguities beautifully and fills in a lot of the physics in laymen's terms. Best of all are the 4 enormously effective practice drills for getting your subconsious brain to "program" the correct swing for you. It's almost creepy...suddenly after a couple 1-foot and 1-arm practice sessions you can magically do the regular swing correctly. My main swing thought nowadays is "don't think". You'll be astounded how little effort it takes to hit the ball 250+ yards with this swing. (One caveat: The first 3 chapters are a tad lame. Don't give up on it without reading chapters 4, 5, and 6 where the gold is.)

Gravity Golf is indeed effortless
Reading about and visualizing the type of mechanics that David describes is the fresh approach to a solid and consistent golf swing that everyone needs. His approach to the components of the golf swing are truly amazing, and the simplicity with which they can be executed is even more amazing.

Hand Quilting with Alex Anderson
Wonderful help. This is a great reference book for everyone to have on their shelf.

Excellant instruction on hand quilting.
This is probably the best book I have found that gives instruction for hand quilting. The color pictures give very explicit instruction for both right and left handed people. I would recommend this to anyone interested in hand quilting, whether a beginner or a long time quilter. Alex Anderson is one of the best teachers and supporters of quilting. She does an excellant job with her program " Simply Quilts". I would recommend all her books.

I've always wanted to hand quilt. Now I can.
This book is the best. It's affordable and comes with color pictures that show me each step for quilting. It even has left handed and right handed instructions. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to hand-quilt.

A must-have!
This books is the definitive work about hard disks. It explains everything about all kinds of hard disks. Besides that, it also explains details of SCSI devices and RAID. It has a large database with jumper settings and configuration details of hundreds of hard disks, wich is very helpful to technicians. It comes with a CD-ROM full of very usefull utilities.

I recommend it!
This books explains all you want to know about hard disk, including lots of information on jumper settings and hard disk CMOS parameters.

Incredibly helpful for people who must install hard drives
This is the most useful source I have for hard drive jumper settings, CMOS settings, etc. I have three previous editions, and wouldn't part with any of them. I do computer support for a large academic department of a university, and encounter a wide range of drives, adapters, computers, etc. These books have saved me a lot of time, blood, sweat and tears.

Hokas Pokas!
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Baen Books (01 February, 2000)
Authors: Poul Anderson and Gordon Dickson
Average review score:

Readers may experience death by laughter.
The hokas are back! The fiction-loving teddy bears are out again on their pursuit of evil and adventure as they learned it from the earthlings media. And they are dangerous: readers may experience death by laughter... .

They're back...
That's right, the Hokas are back. This is the second book with the teddy bears running awok. Watch them act out both childern's books and history, come right to the edge of doom and than pull back with little or no help from humans. Funny AND a delight to read.

The "Demon Teddy Bears" are back! Hooray!
With the earlier publication of "Hokas, Hokas, Hokas" by Baen, all of Anderson and Dickson's wonderful "Hoka" stories are back in print. This volume includes "Full Pack", "The Napoleon Crime", and the novel "Star Prince Charlie." There's an awful lot of humor and joy in these books, along with the usual taps on my "think" button that these authors can't help but hit. If I'm very very good in *this* incarnation, I hope to reincarnate as a Hoka.

Homeplace for the heart
I stumbled across this book in one of the Smithsonian gift shops and had to have it. The warmth of the pencil and watercolor illustrations is captivating. When I read it with my daughter, it always brings up questions about my grandparents and others in our family she never got to know. This book is a wonderful gift for a new parent or grandparent.

A delightful trip down memory lane.
I work in an elementary school library and I came across Homeplace. This is a delightful book for children from 3 to 93. The story it tells brings back memories of simpler times. And the illustrations are superb. There is so much detail on every page everyone is bound to recognize an heirloom or tradition from their own past in them. I have recommended it to many children to take home and have their parents read it to them. I am 40 and I bought this book for myself.

A great story for bedtime reading!
My 5 yr. old brought the book home from her school library. I loved it so much and she enjoyed the pictures that we decided to purchase it. It's an excellent "sharing" book, I used it to talk with my daughter about the importance of what our ancestors did for us.

I'm Still Me
Published in Paperback by Logos Associates (October, 1979)
Authors: Joan Harper and Bob Anderson
Average review score:

I'm Still Me
I found this book to be very helpful in understanding why we make some of the decisions we do in our lifes. I have passed this book on to many people, especially those who are married to women who went through a divorce. It opens up lines of communication. It's nice to know we are not alone and there are others that have gone through difficult times and with God's help have come full circle.

A "must read" for anyone facing fear, loss and pain.
If this were just a book about victory over cancer, it would be a good book. However, it is much more than that-it is a book also about failed relationships, abandonment, and loss. Ms. Harper's healing from cancer is faith-inspiring, and she gives full credit to her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Through this illness, and the many other crises in her life, she attests time and time again to the faithfulness of her Lord. Her incredible courage through life's journeys is truly an inspiration to all of us....no matter what battle we are facing. She has the refreshing honesty it takes to write such a book, holding back none of the embarrassing details. How many of us would be willing to be so honest? This could not have been easy for her, but she was determined to write a book using her own triumphs...and failures...that would help others. Through these pages, she has given the world a great testimony to the truth of Jesus and of His unfailing love when we will but trust. She writes about herself, but she always points you to Jesus.

Definately worth the read!
Joan Harper holds nothing back as she shares her life's journey of heartache, sickness and ultimately triumph. This story offers hope, not only to those who might be struggling with breast cancer, but to those who are looking for something to hope for.

In search of the source : a first encounter with God's word
Published in Unknown Binding by Multnomah ()
Author: Neil W. Anderson
Average review score:

Memorable storytelling meant to challenge
Not very many modern day people spend over two decades living with the most primitive people on earth in the highland jungles of Papua New Guinea. Neil Anderson tastes unusual "treats," hunts for bats with bow and arrow, deals with medical realities, and translates the Bible into a formely unwritten language. Observing life from this perspective while endeavoring to communicate universal truths in the process, Anderson draws images that stay imprinted on your mind and become a part of your heart!

Like thousands of Americans, I have heard Anderson in person; he is a masterfull storyteller. I've read "In Search of the Source" at least three times since it was first published, and learn new insights each time through. The most amazing thing to me about the main theme, the "bete" of life as found in the unforgiving tropics, is how applicable the same truths are to my own experiences found amongst the stone and glass urban jungle where I live!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Neil's book gave me a look into the life of another culture, as well as to the misunderstandings that come about through cross-cultural ministry. See also his wife's side of the story: "Do You Know What You Are Doing, Lord?" by Carol Lee Anderson.

Short stories of God's Spirit at work in reallife situations
Neil is a powerful speaker with a heart for conveying God's truth. The stories in this book display the power and insights being revealed to people looking for the Truth. Good, easy reading with humor and insight scattered throughout.
